Consumeless for a year

A journal of a year of consuming less and consuming sustainably

Exceptions 20/12/2009

Of course, all rules imply exceptions. We have tried to come up with as many exceptional situations we might encounter in 2010 to decide beforehand how we want to deal with these situations. Everytime we have to make a decision for an unexpected ecxeption, we will add it to the list.

.

Wish list:
If we find anything for which we have been looking for a long time, and which is much cheaper than normally (at least 50%) we are allowed to buy it. Of course, the general rule of sustainability applies when we buy this stuff. This list includes the following:

  • A greenhouse, max. € 250
  • A professional router (wood working tool), max. € 250
  • A planer/thicknesser (wood working tool), max. €400
  • A wood stove
  • Books contributing to a consumeless and sustainable lifestyle which are not available in the library

Home improvements:
Our house is old and needs several improvements. We don’t expect that we have time for these improvements in 2010, but if we unexpectedly do have the time, we are allowed to do improvements that will either improve the energy efficiency or increase the value of our house.

  • Relocating the bathroom.
We want to move the bathroom, which is currently on the ground floor of our house,  to the first floor. When we have time for this, the general rule of sustainability applies. Sustainability means: reusing as many stuff from our current bathroom, 2nd hand, recycled, fair trade, local, repairable and energy efficient.
  • Installing a wood stove.
When we have time for this, the general rule of sustainability applies. Sustainability means: using 2nd hand, recycled, fair trade, local, repairable and energy efficient products.
  • All improvements related to isolation.

‘Business’ lunches:
We value informal contact with (ex-)colleagues. However, such informal contact very often happens during ‘business’ lunches in cafes. In order to be able to participate in informal meetings, we allow ourselves to spend a maximum of € 20 per month on this.

Furniture making:
Eise has recently finished a course in furniture making. If he is making furniture (e.g. for ourselves or to sell), he needs materials. Here, the general rule of sustainability applies. Sustainable means 2nd hand wood, FSC wood, wood of ill trees, local wood.

Medical care:
If we or our pets need medical care, we won’t economize.
